Following the St Peters Car Show on Saturday, an early start again on Sunday 15th June, with similar weather as the previous day, as we visited the “Air Britain Fly-In”.

This was a first time visit for the club to North Weald’s annual gathering of small aircraft, whose pilots fly in from various places around the UK including Biggin Hill in Kent. We were the only car club present and had centre stage in a roped off area, amongst the microlights and marquees promoting air museums, aircraft books and other air memorabilia.
For the plane spotters amongst us, it was an interesting day; we saw a Hurricane and Spitfire from WWII which took off and flew around the airfield before returning – with assistance from Steve Perryman who helped wheel them out from their hangar. Their Rolls Royce Merlin engines contrasted nicely with the 80hp-engined Thruster T600 microlight (with bungee cord controls and fabric wings) parked just behind us!
For the ‘plane spotter’ visitors who had their cameras and note books it was obviously a highlight of their day taking down the registration numbers of the planes. It was so enthralling, that Doug thought he might follow suit and take down the registrations of those Jaguar cars present. “Oh, EDG 111C, an E-Type Jag, XTB 673H, a Jag 420G, HSU 419, a Suffolk SS100 . . . ”.
